Nexium Uses

Nexium (Esomeprazole) is in a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. Nexium decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach.
Esomeprazole is used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Nexium is also used to promote healing of erosive esophagitis (damage to your esophagus caused by stomach acid).
Nexium may also be given to prevent gastric ulcer caused by infection with helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), or by the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Nexium Side Effects

Recent studies suggests that certain acid reflux medications such as Nexium may be linked to an increased risk of heart attack, heart failure or sudden cardiac death. This potential link is especially concerning because as many as 20 percent of Americans take medication to treat acid reflux and heartburn.
The study found that people who took proton pump inhibitors, such as Nexium (esomeprazole), Prilosec (omeprazole) and Prevacid (lansoprazole), were up to 20 percent more likely to suffer a heart attack than people who did not take the acid reflux medications. The study also found that people taking proton pump inhibitors were twice as likely to die from a heart issue.
